Haunted Places in San Francisco

One place in this city genuinely lets you in after dark, and it is not the one on the lists. Plus the famous house that is fifty miles away, and the death toll the city rewrote.

Alcatraz after dark is the real thing

The night tour is the only serious after-hours access in San Francisco. A ferry leaves Pier 33 in the evening, runs Tuesday to Saturday, and the visit is around two and a half hours: the cellhouse audio tour plus ranger programmes that only run at night, and parts of the building the day ticket does not include - the hospital wing, D Block's solitary cells. It sells out weeks ahead in summer. Book through the park's own ferry concessioner; several resale sites rank above the official one in search results and charge more for the same sailing.

The Winchester Mystery House is not in San Francisco

It is in San Jose, roughly fifty miles south, and it appears on very nearly every haunted-San-Francisco list published. It is a genuinely strange and worthwhile building and it is an hour or more each way plus a sixty-five-minute tour, which makes it a day of your trip rather than an evening. If you have one night in the city, this is not the thing to spend it on. If you are driving south anyway, it is.

The city rewrote its own death toll

The official count for the 1906 earthquake and fire was 478. The research of Gladys Hansen and Emmet Condon put the real figure above three thousand, and the county later restated it at close to three thousand four hundred - roughly seven times the number the city admitted to at the time. The undercount was not an accident: officials had reasons to keep the disaster looking survivable, and the dead of Chinatown were undercounted worst of all. There is no single site to visit for this. It is the ground the whole city stands on.

What is free and what closes

The streets are free and San Francisco is a good city to walk at night. The ruins of the Sutro Baths and the Presidio's cemeteries are open and free in daylight. Everything with a door - the museums, the houses, the mansions on Nob Hill that appear in the stories - closes in the evening and stays closed. That is why the Alcatraz night ferry matters so much here: it is the one ticket that actually buys you a building after dark.

What a tour is for

A walking ghost tour in San Francisco is buying you narration over public streets, which can be excellent and is not access. Ask what you will be shown from the outside and what you will go inside; in this city the honest answer is usually all of the first and none of the second. If getting inside somewhere is what you want from an evening, book Alcatraz instead and treat the walking tour as a separate, cheaper pleasure.

The entry price is cheaper than three quarters of US ghost tours, which start around $25, so this is genuinely cheap for a ghost tour rather than just cheap.

Questions people actually ask

What are some haunted places in San Francisco?
Alcatraz is the one with substance and the only one with real after-dark access, by evening ferry from Pier 33. Beyond it the regulars are the Queen Anne Hotel, the Presidio's old post cemetery, the Sutro Baths ruins at Lands End, and various Nob Hill houses seen only from the pavement. Note that the Winchester Mystery House, which appears on most of these lists, is in San Jose, about fifty miles away.
What is the most haunted location in California?
Alcatraz and the Winchester Mystery House are the two named most often, and they are ninety minutes apart rather than in the same city. Alcatraz has the documented history - a federal penitentiary with recorded deaths, escapes and a solitary block you can stand in at night. Winchester has the building itself, which is the strangest domestic interior in the state and needs no ghost to justify the visit.
What are some secret spots in San Francisco?
The San Francisco National Cemetery and the small pet cemetery in the Presidio are both free, quiet and almost empty of visitors. So are the Sutro Baths ruins below the Cliff House at dusk. None are secret exactly, but all three are skipped by the tours, which stay downtown where the walking is easier.
What is the only legally haunted house in America?
A house in Nyack, New York - not in California. In 1991 a New York appellate court allowed a buyer to rescind his purchase because the seller had publicised the house as haunted in national magazines and then failed to disclose it, with the court holding the house was haunted as a matter of law. It is a case about disclosure rather than about ghosts, and it is the only ruling of its kind.
What's the scariest haunted house in California?
That question is usually about seasonal haunted-house attractions, which cluster around Los Angeles and the Bay Area in October and are a different product from a ghost tour - one is built to frighten you, the other is a walk through places where something is on record. For the second kind in San Francisco, the Alcatraz night tour is the strongest thing available.
