How a San Francisco ghost tour works
- 1
Pick your night
Ghost tours run after dark and the good ones sell out on weekends. Check the widget above for what is actually running while you are in San Francisco.
- 2
Book with free cancellation
Most of these can be cancelled up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs nothing and holding out costs you the good guide.
- 3
Turn up where they say
This one meets at All tours meet on Union Square, at the NW corner, at 333 Post St and Powell St. Across from us, on Post St, is a store called Saks Fifth Avenue, which is lit up at the top of the building so you can see it from almost anywhere in the Square. Your guide will be wearing a US Ghost Adventures T-shirt and carrying a lantern.
- 4
Wear the right shoes
You will be walking on old, uneven, badly lit ground for an hour or more. It is the advice every operator gives and most visitors ignore.

The route, not the city
The city over-delivers, the field does not
Enormous dark history, a shallow bench, and the route decides everything.
Read the itinerary, not the title
Few American cities have more genuinely dark history - the Barbary Coast, the 1906 fire, the Gold Rush waterfront. Very few of the bookable tours are built around it. A listing that will not name the neighbourhood it walks is usually a downtown loop, and in a city this varied that is the difference between a good evening and a wasted one.
The gradient is a real variable
This is the one city in the network where terrain belongs in the practical advice. A Nob Hill route after dark is genuinely steep; Chinatown and the waterfront are not. Check which you are booking, particularly if you are booking for somebody who will not enjoy the first one.
Fog is not atmosphere, it is cold
Summer evenings on the western side of the city are colder and wetter than visitors expect. Bring more layers than the temperature suggests.
What a night here actually costs
San Francisco's 4 bookable tours start at $24 and run to $55, against a national ghost-tour median of $30 measured across 208 products. That entry price sits below the category 25th percentile of $25, which makes it genuinely cheap for a ghost tour rather than simply cheap. The distinction matters: a low price in a thin market usually means one operator with nobody to compete against, not a bargain. With 4 products the field is small but real - enough to choose between, not enough for competition to have weeded much out. Read the review counts rather than assuming. Our Tour Guide Eric was very knowledgeable and informative. The tour was fun and really interesting.
Eric was entertaining and knowledgeable. A great tour if you want a little San Francisco history and some ghoulish stories.
Our tour guide Shumit was amazing! He made the tour so fun and we learned our lot of San Francisco’s spooky history. I would recommend
We enjoyed Eric's enthusiasm, his energy and his knowledge! Eric was happy to answer questions and was very engaging. In jest from our group, I'll just say - Eric, bring the lantern! 😁
Amazing! Eric was fantastic this was the best tour we went on our entire trip! And it really made my boyfriend’s birthday trip very special! He was just amazing overall!! Would love to do again!!
Eric was brilliant!! It was a great tour and history of San Fran. Would recommend!
Great ghost tour! Eric was very entertaining—Knowledgeable, funny, great pacing, and considerate. He paid equal attention to each person on the tour, from the little girl he loaned the “ghost gadget” to us senior citizens that he helped hoof up Knob Hill. (It’s very steep.) Eric had obviously done a lot of research and added historical background to the ghost stories. We would definitely take this trip again. I must also sing the praises of his company. I had booked the tour for the wrong night and didn’t realize it until AFTER the tour had taken place. Eric encouraged me to contact the company and they allowed us to rebook WITHOUT CHARGING US AGAIN. Not many companies would do that. Another great reason to take this tour!
Very fun tour, Eric was an enthusiastic and entertaining guide

Schmitt was an incredible guide it was a great evening
amazing evening Ben our tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. he made us feel at ease and answered any questions we had
Very informative about this history… very interesting!
Amazing. Would recommend to anyone who loves history and ghost stories
Mike was excellent! (So was Oakley!) Since we were the only ones on the tour we got to ask a lot of questions to a San Francisco native. It was such a fun night, full of ghost stories and travel suggestions. Thanks again, Mike!
Very interesting tour. Great few places. The bar stops were great. Great guide. Would not recommend doing it as the sole crawler. Kinda awkward being the only one that drinks. But still I had a good time. Also my guide was from Albuquerque. And she was glad my reference for that city was High School Musical, not Breaking Bad. So that was a nice moment. Anyways, totally recommend doing this tour.
I had so much fun on this tour! Taylor took us to some really cool pubs and spots around town, and we got a great look at San Francisco at night. She is such a captivating storyteller and we were all mesmerised by the ghost stories, and history of the town. Thanks for a great night!
Excellent tour! My guide, Ben, took time to discover my interest in the history of SF as well as the stories about ghosts. He included that information in my Ghost tour. I learned a lot about SF, as well as the spectural hauntings around the city.
Zane was a great guide - entertaining and very knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the tour. Thank you!
As a professional psychic medium, and average American, this was my very first professional ghost tour. What a better place to do it than in beautiful San Francisco! This tour takes you through some of the most interesting and haunted parts of our city. Focusing on historical and ghostly education, every guest gets a personal EMF reader. If you’re lucky enough to pick up on a spirit, your tour guide will bring out extra tools to further investigate and communicate with said spirit. Our guide Jamie was phenomenal! Whether you’re on your first ghost tour or your 100th I’d highly recommend it. Thanks again Jamie and “The Haunt”
Loved the guide. One of the best ghost tours I’ve ever been on.
Great interactive experience with awesome stories. We actually got to communicate with a spirit on the street. Wes was very knowledgeable and entertaining. This was a great way to spend an evening and worth every penny!
